The central character of this piece of work is Pham Xuan An, a key, but underground figure, during the Vietnam war. He was considered to be Americans' best friends when he was working as a journalist for the Time magazine in South-Vietnam, but that was an undercover job. He was a spy for the communist North-Vietnam. Beyond that, however, he has always emphasized to have always told the truth, to sincerely love American culture, and people. And as a speaker of several foreign languages, we would consider him, in nowadays standards of the 21st century, a "global citizen". SO the question is: how can a spy also be a global citizen?
